I don't want to see the business end of a shovel again for a while....

Here's a slideshow of the redo to fix the leak.

We still have to finish the trim work and filtration but got the new billboard liner installed today and it's holding water. With the new raised box and the extra digging we (mostly me because Bruce has a bum back when it comes to digging) did yesterday we'll go from 18" deep to a little over 2 1/2' I wish it were more, but what I did yeserday was my limit for quite a while...I'll be feeling it for a week I'm sure. Leak!!!! 451982 I'm just too out of shape and have put on entirely too much weight in the last year to be pushing it that much all at once. ex[dig]

What is a billboard liner?

I began watching the slideshow a second time but got worn out just watching. What a lot of work with moving the stones and then all the digging. I'm so glad you don't have my phone number. Your yard is beautiful though and it'll be so much nicer when the pond is all finished and the plants begin to fill in around it.

We have had a leak for a couple of years now but it's not bad enough to bother looking for it.

I never knew that was vinyl. Just figured it was wood of some sort and paint.

That extra weight comes in handy when stepping on a shovel in clay soil..... ex[giggle] Think much work it would have been if you only weighed 90lbs..... lol!

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Esther, here's a link to where they sell the billboard liners. http://www.billboardtarps.com/collections/pond-liners. There are other places too I suppose but this gives you an idea. They are MUCH cheaper than EPDM sold for ponds...but of course they may not be as durable.Other's have told us they are fish safe, and there is no chemical smell to them. We will put "canary" fish in that are I regret to say "expendable" before any really important fish go in.

We've had a leak for a couple years, but it was small enough we could just count the refills as "water changes"..but this year it was so bad we were losing at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the water volumn every day. We can't afford that kind of water bill.

Overall JW we will only still have 2 1/2' feet of depth in part of the pond. we could leave fish out with a heater, we actually did with only 1 1/2' of depth for the first 3 years that we had the pond. But likely we won't leave the koi out. They're still too large and valueable to risk it when we have the tanks inside anyway. So far the only goldies we have that are "winter hardy" are the wakin, and Bruce is making arrangements to trade those for some other fancy goldies. So our fish are all likely to be in the basement for the winter again. Unless like last year some tiny babies escape all efforts to net them. We had two wakin babies that lived outside last year because of that.

Mikey, now maybe you solved the mystery on how I felt I could dig this weekend, but when we built the pond 5 years ago and about 30 lbs less ago....I wasn't up to any of the digging. ex[tongue]

Here's the link again..don't know why that other one didn't work. ex[frustrate]

JW, the term canary fish means...a fish who is expendable..meaning not one of our, favorite, expensive or fancy ones.

Back in the day they used to use canaries (little yellow birds) in coal mines to test the air...to be sure it wasn't toxic to the miners..the canaries would die before a human would if the air was toxic...

so whenever someone says they are using a canary fish it means it is being used to "test the waters" Canaries are often used when introducing new fish in QT too...before adding the new fish to the entire pond.

The filtration is hooked up and a little at a time we'll be finishing up the trim work. But heading to Indianapolis tomorrow for the NMZNA koi and goldfish show this weekend so it'll be what it is till next week now.

We were going to keep some of the koi inside, but we both felt "guilty" because the other's seem so happy in the new pond. So today we put the rest out.

Pics on the slideshow:

We're just going to keep a couple bigger ryukins in the koi tank in the basement to keep it cycled till fall when we bring the koi back inside.

I really like how the deck goes right up to the edge of the the pond, that must be a perfect "feeding area"
Your pond and yard are lovely

Thanks Freddy. There is still some cleanup that needs done. We have to get rid of all that rock, because we aren't going to use it anymore. The tile work and staining on the decking needs finished. And the Trickle Tower/waterfall area still needs rebuilt and squared up. But it's coming along nicely.

I pull one of the footstool's out and sit on the deck and the koi who handfeed are all coming up for their special mouthful and headrubs. They really seem to like it out there. Before the redo the pond was just barely 18" in the deepest spot..we have it 2 1/2' now..so that's an improvement to be sure. We'd like it deeper..but this clay is not an easy thing to dig all that deep by hand.

Hey, we're going to be in Darien in a couple weeks for the MPKS show...do you ever go to that?

we've never been to any kind of Koi/Goldfish show. Can you provide us with the exact dates and if we aren't busy we might just head over there to check it out.
We are throwing a party on the weekend after 4th of July for my sis-in-law
(50 years old) so that weekend is out.
Where in Darien is the show? as that is only about 40 miles or so from our home.
Also if you have any extra time....there is a fantastic pond store in St. Charles that has a display pond that will take your breath away. I believe it is called Aquascapes
but don't quote me on that.
