How does a 150 pound man move a 500 pound porch? I'm estimating the weight of the porch and shooting low. It is constructed of treated 4X4 legs for posts, treated 2X4 decking and rafters and a metal roof. When they moved the new mobile home in, the porch is now about 2 feet away from the door. The only legs that were cemented in were the back ones so I sawed them off. We then put the scoop of a backhoe under one side and lifted it, but couldn't turn the wheels enough to shove it sideways. I came up with an elaborate plan of jacking it up on two floor jacks with wheels on them and shoving it forward but balancing it would be a problem.

My son took a quick look and came up with a simple yet brilliant solution. Tell me how you would do this.

I could jack it up and put it on pvc pipes, but it is sitting on 4X4 inch legs, it wouldn't roll very far before you had to jack it up again and reposition the rollers. You see, besides being very smart, (remember I told you he recited the entire sermon on the mount? I looked it up, it has 2,000 words and 107 verses) my son is still in the working mode as a pipe fitter. He took one quick look and said "A grasshopper." Why didn't I think of that? A stone age solution to a modern problem.

Archimedes was born in 287 BC, but he said, "Give me a lever and a fulcrum and I can move the world." A grasshopper is a device widely used in refineries. It is basically a long lever with a hook on one end and wheels. One man can lift and walk off with a pump that weighs 2,000 pounds. Here's a picture...

I can nail a long board across the legs on either side, then position the grasshopper at an angle, lift it and pivot it. My son has a grasshopper, I'll take pictures when I go today.

The grasshopper didn't work. The well stopped working so I called a well service. Two men came out and one was really a big man. All three of us got on the grasshopper and couldn't budge the ting, it is very heavy. Yesterday I brought two floor jacks with wheels on them and nailed a two by four across the legs. I put three nails in each end of the boards, then positioned the jack on boards so I could lift, then roll it forward. It was working, slowly coming up when the nails pulled out. Today I'll buy two ten foot 4X4 inch treated timbers, (I need them anyway for my deck) and drill 3/8 inch holes in the ends. I'll use bolts and nuts, that should hold it. I'll also detach the steps, they are very wide, maybe four feet, this will make the porch square and better to balance. Once raised, I'll pull my truck behind the mobile and run the winch cable under it. With a rope attached to the front legs and the thing up on rolling jacks, I should be able to ease it forward. The winch has come in real handy for stretching fence real tight and pulling up the T posts that I needed to reposition to make the dog pen larger.

I'm doing this all by myself. Our body clocks are totally different, I wake up every morning at 03:30 from working shift work for 20 years and Vicki sleeps till 1:00. I personally don't know 10 guys who are off of work.

Myself, I would have built a frame across the bottom of the legs and used pipe to roll it to where I needed it. I moved a shed about 12' X 30' after hurricane Rita moved it about 30 feet from where it was sitting. Oh, I had the pipe rolling on 2 X 6 boards. I got lucky and found everything that I need to do the job in the trash. It sure got my customer out of a bind.

Well here's what I started with, the porch was 2 feet from the house and too low to allow the screen door to open..

See if you can solve this Porch002

The steps are 6 feet long and heavy, I detached them to make it easier...

See if you can solve this Porch009

I clamped and drilled the treated 4X4 timber and put a 5/8" bolt in it...

Using one jack under either side wouldn't work. The porch lifted, but then bowed and the legs came in toward each other. You can see how much the timber is bowed from the weight..

So I put both jacks under one side near the legs, you can see how much I was able to move it forward on the first attempt using a crowbar. Going from side to side and moving a few inches at a time, I finally got it done. All I have to do today is level it..

The dog pens and the front yard are all fenced in. I still have about 80 feet of the back corner to do but the posts are in already. We are moving the furniture up there right now, what a chore this is. You just don't realize how much stuff you accumulate over the years.
