I picked up the two rescue horses yesterday Gunny and Glory. Gunny is going to need a lot of love and food. He is nothing but bones and he is basically wild. It took 20 minutes of coaxing him with a handful of feed just to be able to pet him. Glory is about 4 years old, broken and able to ride. Our current horse Honey is trying to establish the pecking order, hording the food and chasing Glory off. I'll have to feed them one in front and one in the back yard. Gunny is in a separate pen until his Coggins test comes in today. We'll keep him there until he strengthens up a little also.

I got on a local radio call in show yesterday and a lady called donating 5 good rideable horses that are gentle. She said her boyfriend has more and she is sure he will participate and she will tell him. She also gave me the number of the pastor of the Cowboy Church in Kirbyville. The congregation rides their horses to a pasture and has church there. I'll see about speaking there for more donations and participation. I'll post pictures after the sun comes up, was just too tired yesterday.

I finished Jacks porch and ramp, roofed it and the rails are up. I'm using shingle to make the ramps non skid and ran out of shingles. I'll get 3 more bundles today when I return the horse trailer.

Here's Glory, she is broken but has been neglected. Her teeth need floating badly so she can eat properly, then she will put on the weight...

This poor little guy is Gunny. The owners were letting them starve and someone turned them in. when the animal control officer pulled up, the mother had starved to death and they were burying her. Gunny couldn't even stand up he was so weak. Believe it or not, he looked a lot worse than this two weeks ago. He can run now, I'll fatten him up in no time. It makes me sick how a person can be so cruel and uncaring. He has a sad look in his eyes like there is no hope...

I have him on a special mix of feed that is loaded with rolled oats, cracked corn and sweet feed with molasses. He too will fatten up and now has a loving home. Gunny is going to put a lot of smiles on veteran's faces in the years to come... as soon as he grows and I break him...

It's so nice to see all these poor creatures are getting help from you. I hope you can help the others that need help to get good homes and live a life free of such awful neglect. It breaks my heart to see them starving like that. Poor little Gunny needs lots of love and tenderness and plenty of good food to help him want to live and enjoy life again w/o his poor mother. Good job Bullfrog ex[thumbup]

Great to see, my friend. You have become "the horse dude", and I am now "the cat lady". I have Morti inside, Stretch and The Imposter outside at home, and now Boxer, at my store! It's like they go out and tell the others where to go to find food... there's always a new one showing up!

Stretch got scratched on his hip, right up at his tail. He has licked it until it looks really bad. I think it abscessed. I called the vet to ask what I could put on it since he is wild and I won't be able to monitor him. They told me to trap him and bring him in. They'll sedate him and clean it out and stitch him up. Since I'm doing it for a "stray" they will throw in neutering since he'll already be asleep. All for about $70. I'll probably be doing that on Monday. Hopefully I can kick this cold I've been trying to convince myself I don't have.

there's no telling what other type of abuse that gunny endured to make him so gun shy of people. even being denied food, he still should come to you if you have food in your hand. They probably hit or kicked him to make him so leery of people. He is in the right place now, Vicki went out late last night and he was walking from empty food bowl to empty food bowl. She placed a bowl of food on the steps at her feet and talked gently to him while he ate. He is still jumpy about any fast hand movements. Hopefully, with time and love, he will come to trust us and see that we mean him no harm.

There is still a lot of activity going on here right now. My friend with the backhoe dug the final septic tank lines yesterday and we got the lines in place. Today he will cover it and the water lines while I attach the breaker box to the power pole and wire it in. Jack and his wife are on the way, I told them the power may take 2 weeks for the electric company to put service in but I have a generator. The weather is good, they won't need a furnace, just have to run it when they want to shower or cook. Jack is being very understanding, he wants this country life so bad he is willing to suffer some inconvenience. That's the good thing about older folks, they have seen the hard times when things were really tough, they don't whine and complain about things like this spoiled generation does. His front porch and ramp are done, still have to do the back ramp. With no electricity, at least they can sit on the porch and watch the horses. Honey is very smart, she likes to play hide and seek with Vicki. Vicki will go into the back yard and honey will follow her. Then Vicki will run away into the front. Honey will wait a minute then RUN in the frony whinnying looking for her, it is hilarious to watch.

We are loving it here. When Jack's place is done, all that will be left to do is skirt our mobile and fence off the driveway separate so the horses can't get into the street when we pull up as they do come to greet us. I'm going to take a week off and try to stick a wild hog with my crossbow. Vicki is going to pick up some laying hens and a free rooster this week. We will have fresh eggs to share with Jack and Sharon. Life just keeps getting better.

Bartender, I hope your kitty gets better soon. I've got two indoor/outdoor cats and one feral female somewhere in her teens now. I have been able to pet her when I put her food out and sometimes I can pick her up and bring her into my computer room when it gets real cold here. She's so old I want to help her enjoy her last years. Although the way she's going she may outlive us. When she was young and I first found her she ended up having 2 litters of kittens and then I was able to catch her in a trap and take her to get spayed. She's so pretty and quiet as a mouse and when she's inside my room she comes up to me for some pets and doesn't seem to mind being in there too much. My DH Bill made her an insulated house on top of a table for when she's outdoors and doesn't want to come in the house.

That is a pretty cat. I have one on my lap right now driving me crazy. Spirit is still a kitten and is spoiled rotten demanding my attention while I try to type, snuggling against my hands. After 18 years of shift work I wake up between 3:00 and 4:00 every morning. I play on the computer and shower then the sun comes up. I feed the queen bitch Honey first, this is her yard and she lets Glory know it. I then feed Glory in the back yard then place Gunny's food on the bottom step and I sit two steps up. Once he starts eating, he will let me stroke his head and not bolt. This morning I'll bring out a brush and bush him. They like this, it is a good bonding thing. It scratches those itches they didn't know they had and maybe reminds them of their mother licking them clean when they were young. With time and a lot of patience, I'll win his trust.

It worked, he actually let me brush him yesterday morning while he ate. He follows me around now when I go in the back but still walks away when I try to pet him. If I continue brushing him every morning eventually he will come around. Jack and Sharon arrived yesterday and they love it here.

They are in a bind with their money from the moving expenses. They also had to open a new, local account which they can't draw out of for 5-7 days. Vicki is very suspicious of them and thinks they are scam artists. Her dad is a cop so he is running a criminal background check on them. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, but they do need to produce the rent within a week. I let them use our trailer because it's cold and the power isn't on in their trailer. Vicki doesn't like that much either. I do hope that Jack is sincere as I believe that he is.

Gunny is coming around a little more every day. Being as I'm out of money until Wednesday, today Vicki and I will actually get to ride our horses together for the first time, it will be great.

Well Jack showed up Sunday and told me being as it was a new account that it would take a few days for the check to clear, we would get our money Monday. That later turned into "Maybe Friday."

He later told Vicki that government checks automatically clear. He then proceeded to tell her that he still has bad flashbacks of Nam and once shot the house up almost hitting his son in the head as the bullets went through the wall. Nevada confiscated his guns but now that he is in Texas, maybe he can buy more.

Not a good thing to tell prospective landlords.

The ad I placed plainly stated "First and last month's rent and a damage deposit." He didn't have it but I was willing to accept one month's rent due to the service and sacrifice that he made for his country but he showed up with no rent. They then went and blew over $200.00 on cell phones, cigarettes and munchies. There was food left in Rex's trailer, a lot of it.

I spent my last dime and over drafted $600.00 completing his front porch and handicap ramp which cost over $500.00 in treated lumber. I told him. "Jack, I can't even buy a pack of smokes until my check hits Wednesday" He replied that I should have called him, he would have bought me a pack.

After fighting with Vicki over this for 3 nights in a row, I made my mind up to boot them. What I didn't know was that Vicki left them a note on their windshield telling them not leave before paying the rent and when they returned to have the deposit or she would call the sheriffs department and have them escorted off of the premises. They left, they did clean the trailer, but threw the note and a large, broke Tupperware container in the yard, this is the thanks that I got for all of my effort.

He later called and said, "Well I guess we aren't getting the trailer?" I told him that when you arrive to rent a place, it is a good thing to have the rent. Also that he blew $200.00 while I invested my last dime on his property and that telling a landlord that you have flashbacks and shoot up the place is not a good thing to do.

I'm glad that they are gone but one good thing came out of it, I'm going full steam ahead with "Back in the Saddle." It is going well, we have 6 horses that are tame and very ride able and I'm just getting started. I spoke to a woman yesterday who is involved with the "Cowboys for Christ" her son has 20 horses. I'll still get on the radio and then it will really take off.

That is a real bummer and I'm so sorry you went through all that work on the porch for Jack. I wonder what the police report would have showed from Vicki's father? I guess it's better you found all this out before he was actually all moved in and settled and then you would have had trouble getting them out or were they all moved in? I don't get it? They moved all the way from Nevada w/ no money and expect to just move in? Not nice at all es[uhuh]

Yes, came all the way from Nevada without the rent knowing that the mobile wasn't ready yet. I busted my ass knowing that I was up against a hard deadline laying sewer line, setting the power pole and burying the water line. At least now I can relax and work at my own pace, our mobile needs the skirting so the dogs can have the front and the cats can have the back.

Jack called yesterday while I was gone and talked to Vicki. He is expecting a SS check to arrive and told her that he would give us the $500.00 that I spent on the porch and ramp, I'm not holding my breath on this one. Vicki is going to tell him that she will meet him at the bank to cash the check telling the cashier and security guard that he owes us $500.00, we will see if he agrees to that. He asked "Will the sheriffs department be there when I go to your place to get the check?" He sure is paranoid about something. I'll bet he left Vegas in a hurry for a reason.

Anyway, back to Gunny and Glory. Glory has taken Gunny under her wing, they walk together all day long and nuzzle each other. She is playing momma to him and he is soaking it up. We finally introduced him to Honey and all is well there, the stall is in the front part so he can get out of the rain. We still have to separate them at feeding time as Honey is a food hog.

What a shame about the Jack thing. I am surprised that he would really give you the money for the porch knowing he's not getting the place but then maybe he thinks he can get you to let him rent it if he's nice to you, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm? He may be some kind of a con artist so watch out. Something is up w/ the sheriff thing cuz why would he think just because you spent money to fix the place and then the deal fell through that you would have the sheriff there waiting for him? Unless he thinks you might have info from a search by Viki's dad Who knows what he's done and could be running from ex[dunno Be careful Bullfrog ex[maul]

The guy is a flake, that's for sure. I sent him an email yesterday telling him that he screwed me, that I built this porch for HIM spending over $500.00 when I could have thrown up a $35.00 set of steps, even bought and hung an American flag there for him. Told him that he threw his trash in my yard, this was the thanks that I got for my effort.

His wife called me back while he listened, concerned about the SS check. They say after they pick up the larger van and do an escort job they will have the money to pay me back. I told them I'd hold all mail until then. If I'm right, the check that came in yesterday is only $497.00. I can't imagine him coming over just to add $3.00 to it and hand it to me. Oh well, maybe this too is a part of God's plan. Maybe the renter that we are supposed to get will be handicapped or have a handicapped child, the ramp is there and I can add another on the back very easily.

We open the gate and let the horses mingle in the evenings. Honey goes right to their feed bowls and sniffs and they come to her feed bowl and sniff. It's amazing how sensitive their lips are, they can pick up one kernel of oats off of the ground with them. They are very careful when they take something like a small piece of carrot out of your hand not to bite you. Yesterday evening, Gunny went into the back yard by himself where Honey was. I saw Glory look all around the front yard for him, then quickly walk to the back yard looking for him, the look of concern on her face was unmistakable. They have bonded like mother and son, he is growing into his own and getting more sure of himself now. It's amazing how much he has filled out in one week eating good feed three times a day. I'll let him plump up some more, then post more pictures.

Yep maybe someone better who really needs the place and is honest upfront w/ you will come along to make the place their home. I wouldn't count much on getting any money from Jack.
So nice to hear the horses are all making themselves at home and enjoying each others company. It must feel really nice to be able to sit and watch them in the evenings just going about their business. What a relaxing place for you guys to acquire and enjoy. You've made a nice place for yourselves and I would love to see more pictures.......... of course you already know that don't you ex[happy]

Well I finally took a day off yesterday and we got to ride. The saddles, bridles ans stirrups all needed to be adjusted to fit us and the horses. We met some of the neighbors who live behind us who are very redneck but still nice folks. One girl spits like a preying mantis constantly but she is friendly. We then took them toward the river, another horse came out whinnying as we approached a boggy area. Glory locked up and refused to budge, maybe she sensed a snake or something but she turned and wouldn't go forward. I finally had to dismount and walk her past that area. I have lost my camera again in the shuffle but will find it. I want to show you the porch that I built and more of the horses. The camera will turn up again soon.
