Wish these were my pond pics but no such luck. I just thought they were nice so I took some pics. They build ponds for people and sell supplies also. They have two of these display ponds out front. I bought some tubing and filter stuff from them in the past. I wish they sold the flat rocks as I've got some things I want to use them for. I hate the price that some stores get for that flat rock so I am on the hunt to see if I can find it outdoors somewhere myself.

Love those conifers and I sure wish I could get that moss to grow on the rocks around our pond

I heard if you smear buttermilk on rocks ...that moss will grow on them. We have moss around here, but only in the deep shade. Our pond is in full sun

I have heard that too by a garden guy on the radio and he swears it works but moss needs shade definitely and does it need a lot of moisture....I'm not sure about that one but it sure thrives here and we have moisture

Yep, buttermilk or yogurt Freddie. I remember seeing a Martha Stewart show where she was painting all her pots so that moss would grow on them faster. What a trip.

Moss does grow in shade. Is there some kind of low growing plant that would do well in rock gardens or full sun that might give you a similar effect?

I once smeared buttermilk on my butt and large ferns and elephant ears began to sprout. Soon, birds began building nests and butterflies tickled my ass so much that I could not sleep at night. Besides, I had to lay on my belly all of the times and the waterfall got the bed wet night after night. Coyotes began to gather in the hills and cry out a mournful sound but they were speaking Spanish so I couldn't understand them.

When that owl flew up and perched on my ass looking for a mouse, that was the end of it all. I sprayed roundup then took a Weedeater to the whole thing. I now have to start all over again.

Maybe try yogurt next time, Bullfrog. It will keep the birds and vermin away.

Weekend starting early???

I really like how that large pond naturally blends in with the landscape around it. It almost looks like it has always been there.

Not going to beat this moss issue to death, but here in the Northwest moss will grow on it's own anywhere it is moist and shady. I have one of those old how to books, and awhile back I found the instructions on how to encurage moss to grow. Put hand full of moss and a cup of buttermilk in a blender. Mix until it's almost smooth. Then paint your rocks or whatever you want moss to grow on with the moss mixture from the blender. Keep it damp and in the shade, and nature will do the rest.

Happy ponding,

Rich Sleep
