A German man who lost his way in the dark while wandering around on sea ice off the coast was saved by a woman 500 kilometres away who spotted
him on a webcam, police said on Wednesday. The man, in his forties, who has not been named, had ventured out on the frozen
sea at St. Peter-Ording on the northern tip of Germany to take pictures of the sunset but became disorientated when darkness fell.
"He got lost on the ice and could not find the coast again because it was covered in snow," Kristin Stielow, a spokeswoman for the local police,
told AFP. The man began to flash his pocket torch in the hope of being rescued and the beams were picked up by a
sharp-eyed woman in western Germany who had also been watching the sunset via a webcam installed on the beach.
She alerted the police, who were able to guide the hapless amateur photographer to safety.
"He escaped without injury but could well have died from cold or been injured on the ice or drowned when the tide came in," Stielow said.

My wife is from Iowa and when she was little they lost a neighbor in a white out. Normally they would tie a rope from the house to the barn for just that reason. If a white out were occur they only had to take a hold of the rope and follow it back to the house. This one winter the neighbor didn't get his ropes up in time while working out in the barn. While in the barn it started to snow. By the time he realised what had happened, and attempted to find the house, he was lost. Much later in a thaw, they found him only ten feet from the house.

My wife doesn't complain about the rain we have out here in the Northwest. After all, you don't have to shovel rain.

Happy ponding,

Rich ex[brrrrr]
