I went ahead and planted mine out in a 20 - 30gal pot under the eave of our house facing south for the most warmth. I think they will be fine cuz we aren't going to get anything that freezes the water now and I read that they can take the cold pretty well. I had to put those rocks in to hold the pond liner flat up against the pot for now but when the plants start growing they will prolly hide the liner so I can take them out if I need to. I'll post more pics as they progress. Freddie do you have yours in really big pots in your pond? If so how do you lug them out when you need to?

Hey Guys...
My Lotus are looking the same.In other words not much happening....Just wait till it warms up some more and they should "take off"
I plant mine in half-barrels and haven't figured out how to over-winter them. Last year they froze solid.
I am trying a couple smaller varieties in 10 gallon pots that I have put in the pond.
Sorry I haven't been on here much lately, I'll try to get some pictures posted when I see some growth on mine
Have faith my friends

The first year I tried growing lotus I had fabulous success with blooms on lotus started from seeds. The past two years though I have had not tried to grow any because we've had overall very chilly springs with late summers the last two years. I think lotus need some tropical like temps to do well.

Here's a pic from when I did have them though.

I wish you luck!

I don't know what type of lotus it was Freddie.

A friend on Koiphen sent several of us 4 different types of seeds. They had a strip of paint on them to tell which seed was which, (some one sent her some, and she got some from ebay, but she didn't know which seed was which lotus.

One of them bloomed in large white with a little pink flowers. The one pictured was large dark pink. And one was a smaller lotus and bloomed with a white flower. The 4th one didn't bloom and didn't get as tall as the other large ones, but wasn't as short as the small one but I think it was more a problem with that one being in the shade too much of the day from a large pine tree we used to have in our back yard at the time too.

JW, my understanding of lotus is that it would probably come back even in our climate, which is colder than yours as long as the tubers are planted deep enough in the ground. But when I had it I only had them in large tubs. I didn't even try to save them. I really don't have a place that I want to dig deep enough and turn into a boggy area here. We have a fairly average city lot. 40' X 120'

This afternoon I just happened to walk past the half barrels and noticed one lotus leaf breaking the surface of the water. I put some of JW's duck weed in all of the half barrels to minumize some of the algae bloom, and can't see threw the duck to see the bottom. I also have two to three mosquito fish in each half barrel. Now I need to go out and push back the duck weed to get a better look at the lotus tubers.

I know exactly how you feel about the little bit of growth but I wish things were speeding along a bit faster cuz if it doesn't it will be fall before they bloom. Our weather has not been very co-operative this Spring at all. I hear it's supposed to get cooler again............down in the 50's. I want to plant my runner beans and my string beans but the soil is not warm enough yet and they will just rot

My lotus and I were talking the other day and whoa that plant is madder than heck at our weather we've been having. It's been raining for 40 days and 40 nights and the poor thing is stagnating like crazy. It's been cold as winter here and we are still having to have fires in our wood stove during the day sometimes. This is really getting old. I want to plant my runner and green beans but I don't want them to rot

JW, and I thought I was goofy. I have been talking to my plants, especially the lotus, and they are not listening to me. The other day I even had to bail out half of the water in their containers, because I thought maybe they were drowning. Not so, they're just treading water waiting for the weather to change.
