Smuggler chased from near border to Irvine

IRVINE - A high-speed border chase ended in Irvine early Saturday morning after authorities captured a suspected smuggler transporting six undocumented passengers in an SUV, a border patrol agent said.

The seven men, who were Mexican nationals in the country illegally, are currently in U.S. Customs and Border Patrol custody.

The driver, who pulled over to the shoulder near the I-5's Culver Drive exit after about a one-hour chase, is being held pending alien smuggling charges, said Michael Jimenez, a border patrol agent. At least one of the smuggled men had been deported before, he said.

The chase began at 1:25 a.m. after an agent saw a man loading the passengers in a white Ford Expedition in Otay Mesa, a small community in San Diego. Agents tried to stop the 38-year-old driver by sounding sirens.

"But the vehicle sped away at a high rate of speed," Jimenez said. "It traveled northbound on the 805 and reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour."

A Border Patrol helicopter assisted in the chase, which covered three freeways, until it neared the San Diego Airport. Then a San Diego Police Department helicopter took over. Agents from the San Clemente border patrol station also joined the chase, which ended around 2:25 a.m.

Passengers in the car were seen throwing pieces of debris out the windows, Jimenez said. He was unsure why they were doing this, but said it was possible the runaways were trying to distract the agents.

It is unclear why the driver had stopped; Jimenez said he did not know if he ran out of gas. Due to the time of day, there was light traffic and no one was injured during the pursuit, he said.

How the agent first identified the men as suspected aliens, Jimenez wouldn't say. Revealing tactics may tip off future smugglers, so officials try not to reveal them, he said.

If officials determine that the men do not have extensive criminal histories then they will be processed and returned to Mexico, Jimenez said.

I think what Mexican President Calderon meant was that the Arizona Law is offensive and racist against Mexicans or Mexican-Americans that legally are in the country.
Let's give an example for those that don't live near the border.
Thousands of Mexicans if not millions go to do some Shopping in the border areas of the USA and so, what he said is that people from Mexico that goes there and spends it, should stop going to Arizona because they might be object of racial profiling.
I seriously think that is what he meant since it will be really mean for someone that looks mexican and just because of it they get stoped and asked for legal status.
When the only thing they are doing is to have some nice vacations or even some awesome shopping..
Mexican-dollars are a big thing in the USA and I see no one complaining about it. Anywho, my point is that he was not referring to the illegal aliens which in the case I think he has to step up and do something about it.

Hey Howell. Good to see you here. The Arizona law requires the cops to have "reasonable suspicion" to detain anyone for anything and secondly requires "reasonable suspicion" to make inquiries about their right to be in Arizona. These restrictions are actually less than the Federal laws as the link following below will show.

I'm a retired cop here in California. Here is a likely scenario. You stop a motorist because they just ran a red light. You ask them for their drivers license and vehicle registration. The driver doesn't speak English. You ask them in Spanish for their drivers license and they say they don't have one. You can now, and only now, begin an investigation relative to their legal right to be in Arizona.

I do understand that.
Still some people are going to be victims of racial profiling, there may be racist cops that just because they want to they will ask for legal status or even a visa or a passport.
I just don't get it.
Besides they are there because of big corporations hiring them, I know the government shows to the people that they are doing something but that is just what they do to small companies or even the construction company.

In that case JW, there are some laws being broken by the same industies there, but people seem to just go against the illegals.
Please watch the movie Food Inc, in there you will see how people with power and money make an entire issue that is coming from them to pass it to another in this case a minority to make them look like it is their fault why America was in such a big crisis.

And I think he does need to do something, and not just appear on tv saying that they are people and need to be treated as such, come on he is not even doing it.

Some of what you say suggests cops are racists. I heard that all the time as a cop Howell and quite frankly it is Bullshit, pure Bullshit. I can't tell you how many times I heard someone say, "You're stopping me because I'm Black." when in fact I stopped them because their registration tags on their license plate was expired or some other violation.

Mexicans, and others, intentionally come here ILLEGALLY under the cover of darkeness and now have the brazen balls to complain about possibly being singled out because of the color of their skin?

If you Google "kidnappings", Phoenix Arizona pops up right behind Mexico. It's Mexicans kidnapping Mexicans on American soil in Arizona. It's out of control Howell and the citizens of Arizona have had enough. Your government and our government have done next to nothing and Arizona decided to step in. God bless them!

Cops come in all colors Howell, including Hispanic. I helped recruit and hire Hispanic officers, including Mexicans who were here on a legal visa and who had applied to become a U.S. citizen. Many of the cops in Arizona are Hispanic. In fact many Hispanics in Arizona approve new law.

I agree that the illegals are here because employers hire them. The Republicans tend to like them because they help business and the Democrats like them because they can unionize them the get their vote.

As I said mikey not every cop is racist, some of them will follow the pressidure and some of them will not, some will just stop someone because it looks like a mexican.
I was pulled over once because my light was out in texas, and the officer just told me to be careful and to fix the light, I was driving under a mexican driver's license.
It was the only thing I had at that time.
As I said before the point is that you may get some illegals in the process of the AZ law but you may get some citizens and even Mexican-american or latino-americans during the process.
BTW all those kidnappings are due to America being the biggest place in drug using so, all those drug dealers fighting for the power to get control all over the Mexican-American border, when it is not Mexico using the drug, a lot of people are mad in here because they want drugs to be legal, but making the drugs legal here will not help the issue since the problem comes when Americans do not make drugs legal.

I don't care about skin color, hair color, or stature. I just care if you're going to be a decent human being. If you're going to stab someone in the middle of a public park with cameras and witnesses, then claim that the officer that arrested you was racist for picking you up, and hauling you in-- we have a serious problem.

I worked as a data conversion operator for a couple of years at the post office. You had to have a key card to enter the facility to clock in, and an ID badge to walk around in the office areas down to the site computers so that you could punch in and out-- as well as what city you keyed mail for.
The illegal immigration problem is a fault at the doors-- where people are slipping in without the keycards. They're the people wandering around without ID badges, who will sit at a terminal and start keying mail-- or start pushing over the monitors, or writing on the cubicle walls. Or harassing folks who are trying to focus on not sending a letter for Ethel in Mobile, Alabama to Nome, Alaska.
It doesn't matter if they're Black, White, Hispanic, or Asian. The ones pushing over monitors, harassing other operators and vandalizing walls are going to be noticed by the supervisors, and asked for their badges. If they have a badge, they'll probably be spoken to. If they don't /have/ a badge, the postal police will, most likely, escort them out-- and if they're really bad, to a waiting city PD car.
The ones who are quietly keying mail? Aren't going to be noticed, unless a higher-up comes in for inspection, and notices that they do not have the required ID.
This is standard policy to keep the building secure, keep the workers and facility safe, and the flow of mail uninterrupted.
Notice how the supervisors and postal police don't wander around randomly pulling out workers to find out if they have the security clearance. Notice how the only reasons that people are discovered and escorted out are because of /violations of rules/.

Cops in Arizona-- hell, in the entire US-- have better things to do than stop every single person whose skin is a different shade because they 'might be illegal'. This law is not a license to hunt illegals, it's an encouragement to follow through if a perpetrator can /not/ produce a valid ID that says they are a citizen, or went through the right channels to enter this country.

Discrimination can take many turns, not just skin color. About 10 years ago, my son had a car that had over 200,000 miles on it. The driver's side door was blue. The rest of the car was white. Here in Michigan we used to have a lot of problem with rust and that car had lots. He got stopped for everything you could think of and never got a ticket. I think because he was young, and had a wrecky car, they were looking for people who didn't have proper ID, license plates, or insurance.

Then on the other hand discrimination can be against old people---women, men, teens----$$$ or lack of---hair (teehee)or lack of, size (good or bad), accents, jobs, where you live, who you're related to, popularity or lack of, college education or lack of, because of religion or politics, grammar or lack of, city people against country folks and country folks against city folks. Did I miss anything?? What we're seeing here is often coming out of differences. I'm different than you because you have money and I don't so I don't trust you not to hit me over the head with it. Maybe you have a high falluting job and I think you don't like me because I clean houses for a living or even am on welfare. So it can be something perceived in us that really isn't even there. Often discrimination comes from not knowing that other person. But then again, it might come because you DO know that person and you apply that thinking to others who are similar to the one you don't like.

Good. It wasn't long ago that my great grandmother immigrated here from Canada after coming from Sweden. A great grandfather came here from Scotland. Pete's grandparents on one side and great grandparents on the other side came from Holland. Guess what the first thing they all did!!! They took classes and passed exams and learned English and got jobs AND BECAME CITIZENS. What a wonderful heritage to hand down to your family!

I don't mean to be down on you Howell or the Mexican people in general. Because I live here in southern California and was a cop here for 30 years I have my own perspective and very strong and firm feelings on what illegal immigration has done to my state.

I live in Orange County California, a relatively affluent county. The county seat is Santa Ana, population of about 400,000. Many illegal immigrants live in Santa Ana. Santa Ana has a high crime rate compared to other cities in the county and it is considered by many, including its residents, to be the armpit of Orange County.

The life style of many of these illegals drives down house prices in Santa Ana. Some families convert their garage into an apartment and rent it out to illegals. A dozen or more young men will live in squaller in these garages. The public schools are filled with their children, most of whom are U.S. citizens simply because they were born here. A significant number never graduate from high school. All the public schools in Santa Ana give the children free breakfast and lunch, money that should go to education.

By law our hospitals cannot turn away emergency patients who can't pay and/or have no health insurance. Thus we pay for the birth of children of illegals......and they have lots of children because as I said the children born on U.S. soil are U.S. citizens. Their parents, although illegal, will collect welfare and health care benefits for their children and if the children are disabled they collect Social Security benefits as well. A recent CBS news report interviewed a Mexican woman living in Phoenix, Arizona. Because of the pending law in that state she was scared of being deported. The interview was conducted in Spanish because she spoke very little English. She and her husband don't work. They have TEN children, all U.S. citizens. Guess who paid for them and continues to pay for them? Illegals learn our system quickly and learn how to abuse it....... In the interview she said they are packing up and moving to Colorado. She was all teary eyed because she was losing her best friend, also here illegally, who she said was moving to California.... Lucky us....

The criminal justice system in California spends many millions a year on illegals. Police respond to calls for service, mostly drunkenness or domestic violence. The county jails spend money on housing illegals pending trial. The courts spend money on trials etc.....

The financial burden is tremendous because these people do not contribute significantly to their costs. They pay no property taxes and property taxes pay for police, fire, education etc. Many work under the table and therefore contribute nothing in either state or federal income taxes. They often have their own economy which does nothing to help. And of course many Mexicans send a significant amount of the money they earn back to Mexico. I have read of the remittances being as high a 9 billion a year.

Americans are extremely generous, the most generous of all nations in my opinion. Every church I have ever attended regularly sends members and money down to Mexico to poor areas to help those people. My wife and I financially support Christian relief organizations to help children in Guatemala, Haiti and Mexico. Many of our Christian friends do the same.

Several of my immediate neighbors either immigrated here from Mexico or their parents immigrated here from Mexico. They hate what they see happening in L.A. and Santa Ana because it reminds them of what they or their parents left behind in Mexico.

Our nation has been blessed by God; tremendously blessed, but we can only share our wealth and bless others as it has been given to us. Americans are willing to help Mexicans but the Mexicans must take the lead and help themselves.

You mention being respectful and tolerant. Coming here illegally is not showing respect. In reference to tolerance, we had this same situation back in the 1980s but not as many illegals. President Reagan, a Republican, worked with Congress and granted amnesty to roughly 3 million illegals. However, many illegals that didn't qualify for amnesty remained here. And typical of Congress, they didn't follow up and enforce the newly enacted legislation that was to stop illegal immigration here. Thus I would say we have been pretty tolerant.....

Well mikey, as I said before I am not pro illegals.
And what is wrong with people 10 kids....I am 22 planning on marry till I am 35 and barely having one or at last 2 but that is two risky now-a-days, economy is not good and I would love my kids to get all I have gotten and more.
Those people need to learn to use protection.
I once went to this poor neighborhood in mexico and there were families that had tons of kids and were living in a small house, I was like what the crap is wrong with them.
I was like don't they see that their economy is not even close to good.

Howell, would it make any difference if you were white and were stopped by a black cop? Green and stopped by a blue cop? Old and stopped by a young cop? Just because you are stopped should not be a matter of resistance or fear. Only if you have a reason to fear would it matter. LIke when I was speeding and got stopped....My heart was beating sooo fast because I knew I was in the wrong. It wouldn't have mattered what color the cop was. I had something to hide.

The same went with my son. Eventually he did some stupid stuff with that wrecky car. He didn't have insurance and even though they might not have had a good reason to stop him, it only made any difference to him because he knew he shouldn't have been on the road without insurance. So in that case, even if it wasn't fair (and fair is a four letter word), in the end they found him out and saved him from an awful mess if he had caused or been in an accident.

This profiling should only be a problem to the illegals. Sure, I'll show my ID etc. Thanks and I'm on my way knowing the police are following the rules that make life here better..

Profiling is common, we do it all the time inside our heads. That is what I was pointing out in the discrimination rant. WE DO IT ALL THE TIME, whether we'll admit it or not. Profiling, discrimination, judging, it's pretty much all the same.

My dad is the type of person that will check on you before you leave, as insurance card and all of that.
We are not allowed to leave the house without our DL and will never ever drive without insurance.
I have never been pull over for speeding but have been pulled over because I had a light out.
And to me it makes no difference I see people as people, some good some bad but still people.

My world view is anchored to my Christian beliefs which is my foundation. I truly believe we all came from Adam and Eve, and later the survivors on Noah's ark. We are therefore related, distantly related but related none the less.

But as we age and have experiences in life that train us to duck after being slapped one more time by a certain type, the next time that person raises their hand, I duck. Is that discrimination, profiling or judging?? I don't know what you call it but when I have been mistreated, threatened, abused, hurt, whatever often enough I learned something. It wasn't intentional that my mind remembers. I have to fight my feelings and try to control them so as not to be obvious butttt. What I'm saying is that if I get bitten by a purple dog often enough, I might just be leary of purple dogs.

My son lived on his own when he was doing the stupid stuff. In fact he was about your age Howell. He's almost 32 now and hopefully has wised up a bit.

I went to school with people of various ethnicities-- from kindergarten through high school-- none of us, so far as I know, ever looked at any one of them and said 'You're different, so you're dumb'. or 'You're different, stay away from me'.
Some of the most popular kids in the school had skin tones that didn't match the snow on the ground.
They were just kids. Chris, Toby-- Alicia. We survived high school together, and still occasionally contact each other, twenty years later. (Has it been that long already? It seems like only yesterday.)
