Well the time has come to take down our hummingbird feeders for the winter months. I always hold out hope for a rare one to show up in the late fall. We only have the Ruby-throat native to east of the Mississippi River but sometimes the fall weather can cause erratic movements in both western and Caribbean species.
It is a myth that they will stay too long if you keep your feeder out too late in the fall. The Hummers know when it's time to leave and having sugar water feeders out does not prevent them from migrating south. It does no harm what so ever to leave a feeder out late into the fall. The only problem is the sugar water freezing if the weather gets too cold.
