WELCOME TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Press 1 for English. Press 2 to disconnect until you learn to speak English.

And remember only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, JESUS CHRIST. And the AMERICAN SOLDIER. One died for your soul, the other for your freedom

Hmmm :[IMG]/confused Well, Freddie, there isn't much I could add to that.

An actual conversation overheard in Walmart...

"When are they gonna learn to speak English?"

"Yeah, if if was good enough for Jesus it aught to be good enough for them."

Now that is a profound statement, Bullfrog. It says a lot about how most of us have come to think. (including me) I really don't mind people speaking their native language when they are conversing with each other. That is part of their heritage and shouldn't be lost. However, I do feel they should learn English in order to converse with Americans. How many of us here in Southeast Texas have heard the Cajuns speaking French? I don't know of anyone who objects to that. And if you go to Louisianna, you'd better not object!

I have no problem with people keeping their native language but english should be the language of the land. We shouldn't become a country divided by language barriers.

something that bothers me is when there is a group of people together, and suddenly someone speaks in their native tongue so only certain people understand what was said.
Then they go back to speaking English as if nothing happened.
I understand the desire to keep one's native language but in certain situations it is impolite to change dialects if the intention is to exclude others

Well, I'll have to admit that, when my late mother-in-law would speak French in my presence while on the telephone, I felt uncomfortable. Like I knew she didn't want me to know what she was saying. Wonder how she would have felt if I had understood her.

At least it was harmless fun! That's the best kind.
