My wife is from Iowa and when she was little they lost a neighbor in a white out. Normally they would tie a rope from the house to the barn for just that reason. If a white out were occur they only had to take a hold of the rope and follow it back to the house. This one winter the neighbor didn't get his ropes up in time while working out in the barn. While in the barn it started to snow. By the time he realised what had happened, and attempted to find the house, he was lost. Much later in a thaw, they found him only ten feet from the house.
My wife doesn't complain about the rain we have out here in the Northwest. After all, you don't have to shovel rain.
Happy ponding,
Rich
