Fabric Dying / Bleaching Question - Update

I posted this on A/P and got some good responses, but thought I' pick you all's brains, too.

I had a white cotton mattilesse (sp?) bed throw that was pure white. I wanted a soft brown / light tan, so I dyed it tan. Came out too pale and too yellowish.

So I got some "Harvest Brown" dye, used only half the box, and tried again, but it came out too red.

Next I got some "Hunter Green" dye, used only half the box, and tried once more, but it came out grey/green.

So then I used the remaining box of the "Harvest Brown," about half of what was left, and redyed the danged thing. Now the color is about right, at least it's brown and not yellow or red, but it's too dark.

So now I'm contemplating bleaching it. But I'm not sure about bleach...

How much would I add to a full washer, to fade the color, but not make it white again?

Also, will bleach hurt the fabric? I know if you get straight bleach on cloth, it will eat a hole in it.

Yes, bleach will "rot" the fabric but I think you have to use it often like every washing and it would take a period of time. It would probably depend on the fabric too.

I would try maybe whatever amount the bleach bottle recommends for a regular washload or a little less. Dry your bed throw to see the color accurately and maybe repeat until you get it lightened as much as you want. I would be afraid to put it in a strong bleach solution.

You might check the dye manufacture's web site too. They usually have help and faqs page there or possibly you could e-mail them and they will get back to you with advice on what to do.

How the bleaching went:

The bottle said "One cup to one-and-a-half cups for a full load, to brighten clothes." I take that to mean white clothes. Since I had a muddy greenish brown bed throw in a dark shade, I put in about two cups of bleach, and ran it through the cycle, then reran it with detergent.

The bleach did its job; It came out just about the right shade.

Only thing is, now it's back to PINK.

I tried to live with it, tried to convince myself it's a brownish pink - but it looks ghastly. Right now it's in the washer again, with a packet of "Tan" dye. Hopefully, the yellows in the tan will even out the pink and I'll end up with some sort of brownish tan in a fairly light shade.

This, I swear, is the last time. This time, it HAS to come out a decent color. At $3.50 a packet, I've spent more on dye than I spent on the comforter in the first place!!

Monday: Well, the tan helped a little but it's still more pink than I'd like. But this time, it looks like it may be acceptable; at least, it's not hidious.

It's on the bed, and it will remain so. No more fiddling with it.

Guess what, Janice? I GOT a digital camera, at a garage sale just this past Saturday, for $20, and it works, too. I just need one of those cord things, or whatever, so I can get pics out of the camera into the computer, and then probably a program on the computer ? ?? You can tell I know zilch about the whole process. Need to get to Radio Shack, some time this week, hopefully.

I also got a cell phone, for my birthday in October, but still don't know how to use it. My gifter also gave me some extra minutes, but, for some reason, they have not loaded into the phone. Need to get that straightened out, too. It's a Trak (sp?) Phone. I don't even know the number!

OK this is my first post. Bleaching is something I know a little about. Bleach is nasty stuff! Did you know that it never stops working even if you never use it again? I used it once on my hubby's white t-shirts and underwear. Once is the operative word here. About a month later little pin holes started appearing in them. 2 months later I had to replace them and turned them into cleaning rags.

Another thing, different fabrics take dye differently. Polyester fabrics usually won't take dye very well. I treied dying a pair of tan pants black because I got a stain on them. They turned out looking like a pair of sick leopard pants plus I had to deal with the dye residue in my washing machine LOL
